Dear Friend,
Early August 2006

I wanted to send a letter before I leave for my Summer trek. The current level of violence, chaos and suffering in the world is so intense that I am struggling with where to begin, what to say, what to do.

When I find myself in this frame of mind and I talk with my sister Rosie, she says, "Mil, read your book!" And I remember to stop, breathe, pay attention - then do whatever is the best thing - right in that moment. Gandhi's words have been reverberating: Become the change you wish to see in the world.

As I write this note, Pioneer OASIS Trainer Elana is sharing the O Strategies with a small group in the volatile Mideast. In Connecticut, O Trainer Steve is teaching Boy Scouts how to stop, breathe, get clear. Just this afternoon I received a note (see right) from the mother of 9-year-old Jed who has been in a D.C. hospital for months with a painful progressive disease. All these remind me that OASIS is my tiny contribution to peace.

Who knows what will be happening in the world when I'm back from my 12-day hike in the Wyoming Rockies? I will send you spacious, clear thoughts from those peaks at the Continental Divide.

More OASIS News and Events

Dear Millie,
Thank you so much for giving us a copy of OASIS in the Overwhelm. It is an extraordinary book, which truly gave us a sense of calm and harmony during an extraordinarily difficult time. When Jed, my son, was at the nadir of his illness, he would hold his smooth stone, and I would walk him through some of the exercises you so wonderfully describe. He would calm down and relax almost immediately - his breathing would settle, and he'd find a respite from his pain. I also found great relief and relaxation from the book. We are all deeply grateful for your gift.

1 Stone
balance your total self
  1. Take a stone - or any object.
    Hold it in your hand.
  2. With your eyes open, breathe in and out, slowly, ten times.
  3. Allow space for your mind to do the "rinse cycle."
  4. Let in the larger picture.
  5. Enjoy your oasis.
